We thought it would be helpful to suggest a few ways clients can prepare their project for a video production company. This is the last piece in our mini trilogy of hiring a professional team to produce your video project.

So, if you’ve decided to hire a video production company to complete your video project, what exactly is there to prepare? In truth, you can reach out to a production house without much preparation. However, there are a few key things you, as the client, can consider that will make the production process smoother and more efficient.

But before we get into how to prepare your project, it may be helpful to briefly understand the production method when you hire a professional team. There is a great deal that goes into each step, but in short, the production process follows this format:

  • PRE-PRODUCTION: Developing the concept and scope of the project, coordinating production timeline, acquisition of talent, and logistics of shoot location(s).

  • PRODUCTION: Actual filming of the project, capturing b-roll, and recording audio, as necessary.

  • POST-PRODUCTION: Editing, ADR work, and collaboration for finishing touches to the final product.

Now, how do you prepare your video project?

We’ll look at these three topics:

  • VIDEO PURPOSE AND GOALS

  • TARGET AUDIENCE AND WHERE YOUR VIDEO WILL GO

  • PROJECT BUDGET

What is the purpose or goal of your video project?

Knowing your video's intent is possibly the most important thing you'll want to consider if you decide to hire a production team for a professional video. Many clients know they want a video, but they aren't clear on what kind of video. And that is OK! Creating professional video content is a process. We think this question can often help clients understand more about their needs is: What do you hope this video will solve or help you gain?

  • Do you need a quality video to explain your products or services to prospective customers?

  • Does your business want to build stronger brand awareness?

  • Maybe you need something more direct, like a series of training videos.

This is important because you want to walk away with a video that delivers the results you anticipated. The clearer your goals or purpose are, the better a video production company can serve you. Even if you have a rough idea of the overall purpose of your video project, then the team you hire can work with you to brainstorm a video concept from there. Noble Bison Productions is a creative, story-driven team that enjoys and welcomes this part of the collaboration with our clientele.

Who is your audience, and how do you plan on using this video content?

Knowing your target audience and where you plan on using the video content is a huge part of successful video production. These considerations fall into aspects of marketing. Your likelihood of engagement and return on investment will be much higher the clearer you are about these two bits.

Elements such as the length of the video, tone, and the content itself can change significantly based on the audience and where the content will go. For instance, longer-form videos are more successful in spaces like YouTube, Vimeo, or specific pages on your website. Whereas 15-30 second videos are more suitable and perform better on Facebook, Instagram, and landing pages.

If you come prepared with who your audience is and where you'll publish your video content, most video production companies can use their marketing knowledge to lend further guidance. They can also create multiple cuts to post your new video content in various spaces. Again, you want your videos to accomplish the goals you set out for, especially if you're investing hard-earned money in professional services. This leads us to the next topic on the list: your budget.

What is your budget?

Having an idea of what your budget is will help you and the video production company understand the project's scope. The type of video you can produce is highly dependent on your budget. The cost of camera equipment, crew, editing, and so on depends on the actual content and how BIG you want to go. Do you need a barebones video, Netflix movie-magic, or somewhere between the two?

Certain types of videos have general price brackets but are not set in stone. Costs and video concepts are always up for discussion (start a conversation with us today).

A final tip in this section: Paying for a professional video production company means you should receive quality video content, regardless of which budget bracket works for you. You should never feel like you're walking away with a video that looks like it was a DIY.

To conclude,

A bit of preparation in these few areas will not only save you time but help you and the team you hire to get on the same page. That's not to say that a production house can't help you decipher or further understand these elements as they pertain to your project. Producing the perfect video requires good communication and collaboration between the client and the video production company.

At Noble Bison Productions, every one of our projects is client-focused and highly personalized. We want your video to come out better than you had imagined.
